As seen in the James Bond film, You Only Live Twice. When producer Albert R. Broccoli came to Japan scouting locations for You Only Live Twice, and looking for a homegrown sports car for Bond's local spy guide to drive, the Toyota folks eagerly pulled two prototypes out of the development program and converted them to roadsters. The film's 1967 release was perfectly timed to promote the 2000 GT's launch.

Other than the roadsters built for You Only Live Twice, the convertible version never existed — although there have been conversions by individual owners.

The Bond roadsters had no tops or side windows, and their windshields were removable acrylic panels. One of them went on to serve as a pace car at Fuji Speedway.
